Novri – Jogja, Indonesia’s Peace Indicator
Indonesia has more than 17.000 islands and 417 ethnic groups. However there are five main islands such as Sumatera, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi, Papua, and Java. My home town is located in Java, the smallest island of five main islands in Indonesia. In the history of Javanese kingdoms, java is known popularly as Java Dwipa. That means Rice Island. Since Java island is the main producer of rice in Indonesia until now. Now the major of Javanese society are Muslim (Islam beliefer). However we have different culture from Islam in Arab or Egypt. There is beatiful combination between Islamic culture, Budhism, and Hinduism. As you know, previously Indonesian society was Hindu’or Budhists beliefer. I think this is the first thing that BABA’s future leader need to know. So that why most of Muslim in Indonesia is really a moderate community in facing the global transformation.
In Indonesia particulalry in Java, the place where I grew up, there is a lot of temples both Hindu and Budhist’s temple. Near my house there is the biggest Budhist temple in the world. Its name is BOROBUDUR. When I was a child, I always passed this temple. I really love the sunset in this temple. Borobudur temple is located on the top of Tidar Hill. If we walk around near Borobudur we will find some other temple but smaller one. However what I want to let you know is the festival of Budhist every year. You know, the settlers around Borobudur are Muslim but they help the festival celebration by creating many cute and colorful decorations around the villages. If you visit this moment, you will realize how life is really beatiful and harmony here.
The last one should be known…my home town is never burned by violent conflicts. When some other areas during the political transition in 1998 were burned by violent actions, my home town keep the peace. So that why my home town is called as the peace indicator in Indonesia. I love JOGJA!
