Maky – Little Brother
I was a real tomboy during childhood. I have several scars as a reminding of my rebellious and mischievous former times. Even old friends of my family members continue asking about the “little brother” I was assumed to be.
Am seated in front, left.I volunteered to help teach some children of a primary school in Kobe.
BABA Personal Statement:
I was born and raised in Bolivia. As in every developing country, the common citizen lives immersed in the pursuit of standard life needs. My father is a Japanese immigrant and my mother is a Japanese descendant just like me and my siblings. Thus, I was raised in a Latin American country with a family that struggled to keep its orientation between 2 home countries. As I grew up with an inner call of “social sensitivity”, the pursuit of basic needs failed to give me a sense of fulfillment. Thus, I decided to get enrolled for a medical school in my city, and with sources of the Japan International Cooperation Agency I was able to finish my studies. Working as a general physician in a developing country is a very fulfilling experience; but sheer vocation is required to overcome the lack of opportunities and rewards. Therefore, in order to continue with career development, I studied English in the Faculty Of Foreign Languages of a local university and kept on “knocking doors” until I found my opportunity with the Nippon Foundation (Nikkei Scholarship). I am at the present living my dream in Japan for more than 4 years and it has been a life-changing experience. I am about to finish my PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine, and started to build the foundations of my future plans. My personal motto is: “Never give up hope”. Now I am aiming for a higher objective, which includes reaching people of every corner of this planet and finding together a way to globalize social sensitivity and make it a keystone for countries development.
BABA Leadership Statement:
In my personal opinion, “Anyone who stands up in the face of our global problems is doing so for all humanity”. Thus anyone who has sensitivity to feel the reality and courage to dare finding solutions can be a leader of its own kind. In the present time, when modernism has brought an era of communication with the so called digital revolution, globalization is a worldwide goal. The gap between developing countries and countries with more advanced economies is increasing. The reality is that entire nations are in an unfair position and facing seemingly unreachable progress. Modernism is a cultural movement, which in many cases antecedes the economic growth of nations. Provoking all kind of reformation but also removing the sense of identity, humanity and life-purpose from its citizens. We see overt violence and terrorism, less access for education and health care services, limited opportunities for job placement and professional expansion. I believe that this is the real root of the several problems that our present world is facing. And I believe that creating a solid net of people with a common goal, like building and creating real solutions for its own nations, can make a big difference. We can illuminate a full stadium with a single box of matches, a leader is the one who “infects” people alike to light up a match and bring on light. Our families, clans, cities, and whole nations are in need of people who can give the first step. This is the role of the leader, not to excel within a group but to impel the whole group to succeed.
